Internship

Duette Animal Rescue Team offers both a domestic and an international internship program for individuals who are interested in learning more about farming, working with cattle and domestic and exotic animals. There are 2 intern positions available year-round. DART provides room and board for all accepted applicants for the entire stay. Minimum stay is 2 months, maximum stay is 3 months. The first two weeks of the internship are probationary, and DART reserves the right to terminate the internship in the first two weeks if the intern does not meet the requirements of the program.

DART is a no direct contact animal organization when interacting with exotic animals such as our prosimians (lemurs).

The facility has a strict alcohol and drug free environment policy. Intern living quarters are smoke free. There is one outdoor designated smoking area at the facility.

Interns will gain practical experience in livestock, domestic and exotic animal husbandry and will be involved with our behavioral research programs. Experiences at DART will include feeding, cleaning, animal health, animal management, behavioral studies, enrichment, operant conditioning, record keeping, assisting in construction and habitat modification, fundraising and related activities.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Interns must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must understand and speak basic English. This is imperative to understand and follow our procedures. We do speak German and Dutch, so these languages are acceptable if the English language skill is only basic. Must have good written and oral communication skills.

  • Have the ability to work effectively in a team–oriented environment.

  • Must have or be working on a four-year degree in a related field (i.e. Animal Science, Biology, Zoology, Veterinary Science, etc.)

  • All candidates must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.

  • Must be willing to work outdoors in Florida weather which can reach above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.

  • Must be comfortable with encountering a variety of insects and the challenges they bring, any allergies to insect bites must be submitted with application for review prior to arrival to ensure everyone’s safety.

  • If flying in from overseas you MUST arrive at the Tampa airport on a SATURDAY (up to 1 PM EST) and DART will be able to provide transportation to and from the airport there. You may arrive at other airports in the US if you have your own transportation to get to the facility, however you MUST arrive on a SATURDAY morning if you want DART to pick you up or drop you off from and to the airport.

  • A Tetanus vaccination is required and proof to be submitted prior to arrival.

  • Proof of a negative COVID-19 test is required prior to your arrival.

    • If you are driving, the date of the test results must be documented. After the negative test, we request that you interact with as few persons as possible during the time leading up to your arrival. We may require you to wear a mask indoors for up to 5 days.

    • If you are flying into the airport, we require a rapid test to be performed upon your arrival in Florida and any cost related to these tests are paid for by the intern.

  • An internship packet will be sent electronically and must be completed and signed prior to arrival. A “in person” Zoom interview will take place with several of our board members as part of the application process.

  • Must be willing to work a variety of shifts, but generally interns will be provided with 1-2 days off per week depending on the projects and activities that are planned. Requests for additional time off may be requested and planned in advance with permission.

  • Having your own transportation is helpful as we are very remote but not required.

The internship is available year-round. Start date can be flexible with proper coordination. A small stipend is available to use towards off-site activities in the area. The days generally start around 7:30 or 8:00 am and last until 5:30 pm.
